Taking Individual Responsibility For The Things We Love

Published: Jul 11, 2011 by admin Filed under: Miscellaneous

Every time I listen to a copied music that I have not bought, my conscious makes me feel uncomfortable.

It says, it's all about taking individual responsibility for the thing that you love, for being part of the solution and for being a good citizen who wants to get every possible best stuff....and do not hesitate to contribute in making so.

I don't know how far and wide my action can make it difference, but I am happy that I am not the part of the circle who discusses about the problem making long face but when it comes to apply their own established principles, they shrink themselves from doing so.

Here I am throwing a story for you, and you can pick up any ‘moral’ out of it, subjectively.

"There was a man enjoying a fresh breath of the sea beach. Suddenly a big wave brought many fish and the retreat its wave leaving the fish in the beach without water. Thousands of fish were dying without water. That man thought of saving those fish by throwing them back to the sea. However, a feeling that he alone can't do anything overwhelmed and he paralyzed himself from doing anything.

In the mean time, little far, he noticed something peculiar. He got closer and saw that a young boy was throwing whatever fish he could hold in his hand back to the sea.

He asked the boy, “what’s the point of saving handful fish, when thousands of others dying”

The boy replied without turning his face, “I don’t have power to save all, and that is not of my concern. What I am concerned is, I will save as much fish as I can.”

The man was spending his energ y to increase his horizon of “worry”
The boy was spending his energy to increase his horizon of “action”.

What happened next?

Many other people around the boy joined their hands with him and saved thousands of fish, if not all."

My musical Journey…

Published: Jul 6, 2011 by ghisan Filed under: Miscellaneous

How it started

It’s like, kind of unofficial or informal way to express or write down my thoughts in a piece of paper and share my feelings to all those who have their different experience in life on their destined path. I mean I am not a professional writer neither do I have all of the life’s experiences. But sharing feelings has always been good for me.

My involvement in music started from earlier days and that was like about 12 years back and it was all at school.  Talking about my schooling days, I was never a bright student neither I realized any extra talent on me. We used to have singing, dancing and music classes every week, towards which I was more attracted besides formal study. At that time, we were taught these subjects by some great teachers around the city, which helped me to learn music quite good. During music classes, we were taught an instrument called ‘Madal’ which is typical Nepali musical instrumental played for Folk songs. But today, we can hear this instrument in many different musical genres. That was the time when I was in the 4th or 5th grade. I don’t exactly remember everything, but music classes were what I liked the most and wanted to attend. We had a class of almost 40 students as far as I remember and I was one of the favorite students of my Madal guru. I don’t know how it came or what happened but the instrument really drove me. I still remember, we were doing some typical Nepali music stuff playing “Panche Baaja” a musical form from rural areas with a set of instruments like, Jhayli, Tyamko, Damaha. I guess I forgot some of the names. Being a good student in Madal, I was asked to play one of the instruments first and the rest of my mates were behind me. I think the instrument was Tyamko that I played and believe me it just worked out well for me. Then we were out for many stage shows representing our school and also won 4th prize for playing Panche Baaja.

Till then, I was not ready for any professional musical thoughts.  So, for me it was like weekly interest. Then later, I saw my brothers playing guitar songs. But my interest in Madal was nevertheless until I heard some of the songs from legendary rock band-GNR. The song was sweet child O’ mine and the intro, you won’t believe it but it blew my head off. Then for the first time I held a guitar and learn few Nepali songs and GNR songs, too. Just like Madal, I was doing well with guitar as well as seeing my seniors playing guitar in cultural programs. I thought if they can play it then why can’t I. So, this feeling led me to practice guitar for hours and hours and that time I was in 8th or 9th grade. But I never thought that I would end up in this field and would devote my life to music. It was just my crazy dreams and a feeling of showmanship as starting to play guitar. Moving on gradually and learning eventually my interest was digging on me very fast and deep. After completing my school life a feeling stroked my mind and I thought sitting in 45 min class among teachers was never effective for me but listening to a 5 minutes song, I could grab the sound of music. Then I realized that I have something important for what it takes to be a good musician, but I was not particularly good at my playing stuffs. It is said that, “every individual is blessed with a talent, only thing is that we must be able to identify it within ourselves”. The statement just kept coming to my mind and hit me really hard. By the time, I had started playing guitar but wasn’t much into theory. I started searching for music teacher. But my stupidity had no limits. Earning so much respect within a short period of time from surroundings was good enough for me to continue my passion for longer time. But it felt my mind with stupid and just a foolish desire to be a rock star as I had a stupid thought that I have mastered everything on guitar except I needed damn speed fingers. So, I used to ask my teacher for a help to teach me some nice fingering stuff as I had already started listening and following some of the greatest Nepali rock bands like, 1974 A.D, Nepathya, Mukti and Revival, Robin and the revolution, Abhaya n the Steam Injuns etc. and guitar gods of 80’s. Every institute, I would go to learn for, my focus was only building up speed on guitar. That was the time, when I was doing intermediate level course and everybody were out there listening hardcore metal. And watching videos of some greatest and fastest guitarists in the world ruined my mind and I just kept on focusing building speed rather than composing own songs. For almost 2 years I just did nothing but played band songs in my acoustic guitar for over and over again. I forgot to mention something important here, during those days I met a rock band through my classmate and they were just busy in composing and writing their own piece of songs and they were a kind of different entity in themselves, positively.  Every day I would go to their practice room and listen to them playing their songs just washed my mind and for the first time I asked myself, what have I done these long years, fooling around? The answer that I got from within myself was actually nothing.

Hanging out with each other, we sort of built pretty good musical relationship and we began to share feelings and knowledge. I have never felt so alive and a positive vibe entered into my mind. After few months, I joined the band and we started jamming for over an hours. Most of our time would spend on jamming or talking about music. There was a different energy within all the band members as our musical journey had just started and for me it was just completely different and learning experience as I was not playing alone anymore. We also did record a song and a music video of same song which later received "Image award" for best animation category. But till then I had already left the band as I had to go for job and teach guitar as well. And honestly, I wanted to learn more and a step further in this field. But within the time period when I was in the band, I learned many things and experienced some truths about Nepali Music Industry and music scenario here. Again I have been playing guitar for myself as I used to do some years back, but I can feel music in a different way than the youth of my age. And appreciations from my friends will always keep my musical feeling alive and honestly I appreciate myself as guitarist. But the major question that I ask myself is 'who would I be if I hadn't chosen music'? and that is what keeps me encouraging in this field.

Public Discussion on Promoting Nepali Music with Abhaya Subba.

Published: May 11, 2011 by Adeel Filed under: Miscellaneous

A quick Question from AbhayaSubba Weise : Does this mean that people will actually buy Nepali albums instead of looking for free downloads? Will people come for concerts and pay for tickets? Does this mean that we as musicians will be united and not at odds with each other?

Adeel Manandhar : What do you guys Answer for This??

Purushkar Khadka

It is quite hard to say about this fact.. but we have got to put it together... and try for new changes..... and Senior bands and a good bands like Abhaya and the Steam Injuns ... should make their first step to show the way to others........

Adeel Manandhar

Being a Customer it is a hard fact that 'People pay money for free downloads that they can get'. The product of the song is a sole property of The Artist. There is no right with others to pirate the MP3's and videos. For this my suggestion ...for all the artist is to get united and Fight for your Rights. And we the Listeners are always here to promote our Mother music. If you give us the systematic way we will go systematic too buying the CD's and adding hits to your sale and promotion.

Purushkar Khadka

It is obvious for Nepali band to raise this type of question... but lets not just always make it our excuse....kei na kei ta garnu paryo ni ... now I know that convincing and explaining people and bring people towards this field is a very hard thing to do... beholding this ugly truth... need to do something ... :)

Asmita Shrestha

My answer: It is obvious that sittai ma payo bhane kina paisa tirne? We are getting the songs for free than why should we pay money. I dont mean that I will not pay money for the album if I am passionate with the artist and their songs.. I ...have been to the concerts too but what I see is event managers are not going for the crowd satisfaction but the self profit only. how come in this situation we help promote the Nepali Songs??

Baucha Blues

desh gareeb bhaye pani ... nepali sita paisa ta chha ni... bryan adams ko concert nai bhanau na... it was like a festival... tyestai gari nepali artists ra organisers le tyestai khale management, security, promotion etc garidiyema ta nepali concerts ni success hun6 ni...

Adeel Manandhar ‎:

Baucha Blues I really appreciate your example of Bryan concert.. If you look for the crowd than there is a crowd to support the music scene!

Baucha Blues

let me mention one interesting fact... maile chinne saathiharu... lok dohari ka paarakhi haru... jasle bryan adams ko naam nai sunethiyena jindagi ma... tiniharule thaha paye canadian singer bhanera through various media...ra concert ma ni ...gaye... i suppose curiousity ko kaaran le hola...n ' they really enjoyed the songs as well though they didn't understand the lyrics...lol... j bhaye ni rock influence ta paryo ni unuharuma ni... their response was guitar ta daami bajayo yaar...ho tyestai khale event hunu paryo nepali bands haruko laagi ni...

Gaurav Sitaula

The job of musicians in the international mainstream is mainly to create a song then perform it later on. but from what i have seen in Nepal musicians have to do most of their part starting from the recording of their songs, well most of th...e bands try to record, mix and master their song themselves, but without a qualified producer and record engineer no doubt the song is going to sound like shit, unless u got the art of producing a great song by yourself. and another thing in most of the shows there are just too many bands performing. the problem is the same thing without a good engineer u cant get a band to sound right just miraculously, even international bands spend a hell lot of time for sound check, just to make sure all the sounds great. so just like business unless u dont offer your costumers a good product, they wont pay a penny. the same rule applies here. that is why the fan base of nepali rock songs is so low. coz unlike other pop singers their whole song cant be recorded by a keyboard. and they cant just sing in tracks.

Adeel Manandhar

Thank you Gaurav Sitaula and AbhayaSubba Weise for your opinion/experience on the present condition of Nepali Music Scenario. Now when coming to the point of the sound quality produced with the final output of the song after mastering is not a big deal in some cases. I really do think that the sound quality is the most important thing that the nepali musicians are lacking with. Not only the case of Live bands but also many case of track singers too. I mean there are many old Nepali songs that did not need quality to their product but the power was with the 'origin of the song'. Those songs had a technical parts too but also within the song itself it was powerful. Here comes the same question with the Live Concerts too. We did not had any special lights before decades but still when going into the true scene of music listener, it is praised that Old Songs are far more better than the upcoming new songs and live concerts within the youth. I do feel the same way sometimes, but still if there is a will there is a way. :)

AbhayaSubba Weise

Gaurav, this is not support. This is criticism. I do understand that u know no better. And let me assure u, Mukti da's, 1974 ad, Robin dai's album doesn't sound like shit. Support...didn't u READ, the name of the page? Not CRITICISE. All said n done,i totally support new and upcoming musicians. Supporting music means encouraging artistes not bringing them down, which is true crab mentality. I rest my case.

Rannt Bastarrd:

now I don't agree with that. you can not predict if or not they're in a band. who knows?? they might have beein struggling to get to the mainstream scene.

Baucha Blues

I totally agree with U Abhaya DD but I'm not talkin' about the technical parts... we can't compare dollar with rupees.. but i'm talkin about the support that the event got at that time from different sectors like media, business houses etc...... Why can't Nepali artists get that support... N' why those organisers don't take initiative to organise such kinda' event for nepali artistes??? Hats off to u dd for promoting new comers...i'm talkin' 'bout SBC ...it really rocks...

Adeel Manandhar

Just Checked out Gaurav Sitaula's profile and found with his original and cover songs with the Bands. He seems to have intellecualism with the music things in youtube too :).Anyways it's not about the discussion showing each others mistake...s. Both are right in their own ways and we need to start respecting the views too. AbhayaSubba Weise, We are here to promote you and want to share some views of listeners too directly to the Artist. This is a discussion with the Promotion steps that every Artists,Composers, Arrangers, Studios, Companies and the Local Listeners can take to Promote the Scene. So all have their equal part within themselves equally. If even a single chain is broken there is no other way out.

Gaurav Sitaula

Ms. Weise I wasnt trying to criticize anyone or anything. I was just trying to point out that quality is really the issue in most cases. Nepalese people choose english and indian movies over nepali movies just because of quality. also major...ity of people from nepal are also listening to songs in foreign language. i was just suggesting this so that the scene could get stronger with more audiences. and again please don't take this as a criticism rather take this as a fact. i have known people who stopped listening to nepali songs completely after they were introduced to songs from band like metallica and guns n roses. not implying that you need to sound like them, im just trying to say the records that are made in nepal today donot sound nowhere close to those records of gnr made 20 years ago. and that would be something for musicians to think about. :)

AbhayaSubba Weise

Forget it! I didn't mean to get into a full blown discussion that doesn't make any difference to the music scenario in nepal. I'll let our music and performance speak for itself.Slam,dunk- if anybody wants any help with their music,promotion...production - i am at ur humble service.

Prabita Tamang

I really liked the discussion above. With discussions one can come into very good conclusions. Sorry to say Abhaya DD but I do think that these things matters in Promotion of Nepali Music. Every listeners and Artists have their direct and indirect role to play with the promotion of Nepali Songs equally. If there is no conversation between them than there is less possibility of the systematic Promotion. So Let's Be Connected to Promote the Nepali Music together with every sectors we could. Keep Rocking mates!!

Anup Raj Shrestha

‎Adeel, I'm listening song of Gaurav and he is doing good from his part.

This group helped me listen song by him and obviously thanks to supporters of Nepali Music.

I liked AbhayaSubba when she said

"I'll let our music and performance speak for itself.Slam,dunk- if anybody wants any help with their music,promotion...production - i am at ur humble service."

@Bucha, you too help me too to listen Gaurav and his work.

This is my new post here but I was listening the discussion without any sound. The hot and rapid FB-Notifications of this group attracted me here. Maybe all the group member are doing the same.. listening silently.

ahh.... I felt good to post one supportive post here.

Gaurav Sitaula

thanks anup, and also i wasnt trying to pose as a hater of nepali music, i happen to be a student in the field of sound engineering and i was expressing my thoughts in my perspective, i have been doing my music on my own way since a long time, and i do realize the fact i am no where close to where Ms. Weise is. but i still dont get the crab mentality thing, did she even read my post or not? forget it guys im out of here. sorry for making this stuff so personal.

Ja'gyür Rigtsal

I think that you could have free download and the get an audience and then you could have a concert and make money from that ...

AbhayaSubba Weise

Why,oh why do we have the tendency to appreciate only the things that are dead or musicians who won't walk out of their graves. For me, SUPPORT means giving the devil their due while they are around. Here are a few contemporary musicians who have pushed the envelope. Robin Tamang for his social commentary and breaking taboos,Axe band for having a sexy guitarist,1974 ad for their amazing folk rock sound,Aastha Tamang Maskey for showing our industry that not only is she a singer par excellence but that dudette can play a mean guitar, Jindabaad for an excellent vdo,Shadows for stepping out of chitwan and rocking us,Cadenza for making jazz popular in ktm n playing gr8 music to boot, Black out and G9 for their freshness,Nima Rumba for his awesome performances, Sabin Rai for his songs with THE voice that drives us all wild,Ciney Gurung for her beautiful stirring voice,Nepathya for doing it differently...they are all path breakers. The only question is,do u want to appreciate them now or 20 years from now.
